Fifty years of the stability conjecture

Enrique Pujals, Graduate Center, City University of New York

Resumen: For a dynamicist, stability means in loose terms that the relevant dynamical behavior of a system is actually the same, in some appropriate sense, for all near-by systems. Stable systems have a central role in dynamics, and the stability conjecture formulated by Palis and Smale fifty-two years ago proposes a characterization of them. We will discuss the meaning of that conjecture, its significance and its current status.
